#17 Head Question

I've found a #17 head for my 1987 300D. I was hoping it would check out ok but they've found some corrosion problems with it. I understand that it is flat and good to go in that respect, but had some corrosion in the head surface that extends into the "sealing ring" on the head gasket. The shop stated that they need to pull the head apart and weld and machine this problem area. I know from searches that welding is not recommended for cracks, but I'm unsure about corrosion of this type. Please give me your thoughts on whether I should go for this head and this type of repair's reliability.
