#17 Head Question
I've found a #17 head for my 1987 300D. I was hoping it would check out ok but they've found some corrosion problems with it. I understand that it is flat and good to go in that respect, but had some corrosion in the head surface that extends into the "sealing ring" on the head gasket. The shop stated that they need to pull the head apart and weld and machine this problem area. I know from searches that welding is not recommended for cracks, but I'm unsure about corrosion of this type. Please give me your thoughts on whether I should go for this head and this type of repair's reliability.

While I'd certainly prefer that nobody bring a torch over to an aluminum head, the repair that they plan to do is unlikely to cause any long term ill effects to the head, provided that they only heat it in a localized area to apply the filler material.
Before proceeding, please weigh the cost of the head, and the repair, against another head that is in better condition. I do understand the lack of immediate availablilty of these heads, so, clearly, that will weigh on your decision. |
