My bet is on the firewall contraption also! (Accelerator Pivot Mount
Part Number: 30-037 ) If it wiggles excessively or slides apart then it's broken. Those durn things only last twenty years or so...

Since my car was new in '82 I have carefully used brushed-on white Lithium grease for the throttle linkages. That was on Ma Benz and the dealer's head mechanic's advice. He had been a Porshe and MB dealer in Nashville until 1960and decided to continue his love of wrenching on the Mercedes. I lucked out knowing him and still value his advice, essentially getting mentored by a craftsman.
