240d manual trans or throttle problems?

I's stunted. A few days ago when shifting to 2nd the pedal seemed hard to push down on ,like it was stuck or something had gotten behind it. I pushed harder and the car would not accelerate, or did unnoticeably. I taped the pedal and no help. I shifted to 3rd then down to 2nd and it seemed to work. I looked and the pedal seems clear and moved freely,so i sprayed wd40 anyway. I moved the linkage from under the hood and it moved freely. I just finished a valve adjustment and valve seal change out and may have reconnected a link incorrectly, but it all moved easily as i moved it by hand. It is now hapenning 2wice in the morn and about twice on the way home. Any Thoughts for a good 240d manual 1982. Ray

Check the rubber throttle block that is located near the firewall, at the aft end of the throttle shaft. This part can appear intact but, in reality, has failed preventing the foot pedal from moving the IP's power arm to the full load position when you mash the throttle.

Get a helper to mash the throttle pedal and look under the hood to see if everything is moving as far as it is supposed to go. Also, use ATF or a light oil to lube the linkages; WD40 isn't really a suitable lubricant for this application.

My bet is on the firewall contraption also! (Accelerator Pivot Mount
Part Number: 30-037 ) If it wiggles excessively or slides apart then it's broken. Those durn things only last twenty years or so...
Click on the Buy Parts button at the top of the Forum page and ask Hunter or Phil...

Since my car was new in '82 I have carefully used brushed-on white Lithium grease for the throttle linkages. That was on Ma Benz and the dealer's head mechanic's advice. He had been a Porshe and MB dealer in Nashville until 1960and decided to continue his love of wrenching on the Mercedes. I lucked out knowing him and still value his advice, essentially getting mentored by a craftsman.

Motor on

Thanks I'll try that. hope it works. It looked intact the other day when i had to remove it to change glow plugs. I can tap on the pedal and it doesn't help. sometimes shifting up to 3rd helps.

You can't really tell if it's defective unless you have someone mash the pedal and you look to see if the power lever is moving all the way to the full load position.

i like to pop off the ball sockets and dap a little axle grease in there. it is a little stickier and hangs in there. do it once and never again usually.
