The transmission pan will slosh fluid all over. It's possible to make it leak mostly from one corner (where your drain pan sits), but you won't get it all. I did use a steel tray, and the floor didn't suffer. I'd say that I lost over a half-quart into the steel tray. A half-quart on the floor is not pretty.
