they make the sleeves a little small, so that you can hone them to exactly the right tolerance to either your reused pistons or the new ones which will vary according to how tight the bores are etc. the clearance on a benz diesel is a lot tighter than on most engines so this proceedure is effective in achieving what is required for excellent operation.
