yeah, you definitely don't need to remove the motor first. I've done this a couple of times... I know that's what the manual says, and I can see why, but it's not necessary. basically you need to gut the door of everything... window tracks, the side mirror, etc. and then you can get the complete regulator out. I just did this on my 116 a couple of weeks ago, and before that did it at the pull-a-part in order to get the regulator I was putting in.

just find the hidden screws... there are at least two or three that are hidden by weatherstripping. the rest is just a matter of patience.
