I don't think they had anything to do with the clamping. They completely filled the hose from end to end. I reinstalled them in the new hose but I still don't know their purpose. I'm quite surprised that nobody has mentioned them on this board since I know a number of people have replaced this hose on their TD. I bet the shops that built the new hoses just said nothing about them.
