There are plenty of stories in the aviation world of engines being replaced after "eating" themselves, but the oil cooler gets left bolted to the firewall, untouched. Then the oil cooler, which is full of metal chips, ruins the new engine in short order.

The 617 engine, however, is at a distinct advantage over most aircraft engines in that the oil flows from the cooler directy into the filter housing prior to entering oil galleries. That reduces the risk factor considerably.
