Never heard of the P2P programs, but as someone who traveled abroad a lot as a kid and did an exchange through school, I think a lot of the learning is wasted on kids. Juniors or Seniors in high school are about the only kids who might get much out of the trip.
I know I regret the fact I was young when I did most of my travel. I learned alot, but I would've gotten so much more out of it if I were older.
