They are really excellent cars with few issues. The newer ones will have more electrical gee gaws that will cause grief as they are getting a bit old, but the basic engineering is very bulletproof. My 84 500sec was probably a bit cheaper to maintain than a deisel equipped 123. There were few little glitches that I ignored, such as the right side seat belt presenter was erratic and sometimes went on a presenting rampage which I could stop by fastening the belt.
The low price is simply indicative of the fuel economy which is in the low teens around town and high teens on the highway. Then too if you have them serviced at the dealer one repair can easily exceed the value of the car.
