Eliot:
In my opinion you are simply out of luck and will have to replace the carpet. In 1978 I spilled some differential oil on a sweatshirt I was wearing. I kept that shirt for probably 15 years afterwards, washing it many many times and spraying various stain removers on it. I was NEVER able to get rid of the smell. I kept it around partly because I was astounded at the amazing ability for that smell to continue to linger. The stains disappeared but I could always pick up the shirt and get that sulphur odor.
My recommendation would have been to cut out that carpet immediately before there was any opportunity for that smell to get into the subfloor. If I were in your shoes, I would replace the carpet with hardwood, just to get a solid surface between the subfloor and the human nose.
