If I forget my iPod in the car overnight past say, mid-November, forgettaboutit.
As stated, the batteries/HDD and internals don't like the cold. If you slip it inside a warm coat pocket, it's usually good to go in about 5-10 minutes.
Mine will do a variety of things when it is too cold - battery warning, fail to power up, work for a bit they die, etc. Mine is connected to an in-dash harness adapted to my factory radio and it charges while connected. That doesn't help when cold though. It still needs to reach a certain temp before it will play, regardless of external power.
