iPods and Cold Temps

Noticed my iPod hd goes on the blink after being out in temps anything below 20F. Anyone else have this problem? Takes about 1/2 hour of exposure.

Lithium ion batteries don't work well when their cold. Hybrid cars have heating elements built into their batteries to prevent this. Are you running it on a charger?

No, fortunately the temperature here has not been that low for me to have found out.

Yea, I usually leave mine in the car at night. I never remember to bring it in. I usually slip it into a pocket for a few minutes and it pops back to life.

It's charged only when it's hooked up to my MacBook (iTunes). Usually always at least 1/2 charged.

If you have it hooked up to an external power source when it's that cold it "should" solve the problem. It could also be that the HD is not spinning fast enough due to the temps. You'd have to check the manufacturers operating temps for the HD to be sure. What model/generation Ipod do you have?

If I forget my iPod in the car overnight past say, mid-November, forgettaboutit.

As stated, the batteries/HDD and internals don't like the cold. If you slip it inside a warm coat pocket, it's usually good to go in about 5-10 minutes.

Mine will do a variety of things when it is too cold - battery warning, fail to power up, work for a bit they die, etc. Mine is connected to an in-dash harness adapted to my factory radio and it charges while connected. That doesn't help when cold though. It still needs to reach a certain temp before it will play, regardless of external power.

Ted, my 80 gig video doesnt like the cold.... the hard drive wont spin up if its cold.... I usually stick it in the pocket or in the airvent to warm it up, and then it works...
