Dead Starter?

So I just finished installing a new water pump/thermostat on my 85 300td. It ran well last night (after the install) and I started it up many times with no problems. This morning (10 degrees f) I went to start it a nothing no cranking at all....I is the same as when I try to start the car but its been left in gear. I don't think it is alternator/battery because the headlight glow strong and when I turn the key the lights don't dim at all. Any suggestions on what may have happened. I've never had a starter problem before. One thing to note: The + battery cable has been on very loosely lately, could this have caused the starter to burn out. Thanks in advance.

Brett
