If you use MDF for your spacer, use drywall compound or wood putty to fill the edges and sand it smooth. I use MDF all the time for lamp bases and if you don't fill the cut edges, the paint will just keep soaking in and never make a good finish.

LOL yes mdf. Thats the programmer in me talking. Mine will look much better than that. I was planning on 1.5-2" of MDF cut at and angle and sanded/rounded smooth covered with appropriately colorde grill cloth. Not OEM but I don't have a cover for the medkit as it is.
