smoking under the hood...in the bad way

Hey Gang,

I have a 240D with about 225k miles on it. I've had the radiator completely replaced (after failing) and now there's a piece just behind the radiator at the bottom of the vehicle that started smoking a bit this morning. Smelled awful, too. My buddy tells me he thinks it might be the air conditioner. The AC is busted anyway so can I just snip the belt attached to the smoking apparatus?

Also...I'm very green when it comes to cars but I'm tired of not being able to figure things out on my own. Is there a website that clearly labels the stuff under the hood (diagrams or just labeled photos) that a n00b like me can use to start getting familiar with this stuff?

Here's some pics of the piece that was smoking:

Thanks,
-Ian
