Take off the whole grille (chrome frame and all). I think there's two black rubber bumpers screwed in on either side near the bottom of the back side of the grille, and there may be another couple of clips near the middle that also hold the plastic in.
Once you get the plastic off, the chrome inserts slide right off either side if I remember correctly.
