People get hit because they walk out into rush hour traffic expecting everyone to see and stop for them.  Much less risk if you cross at the crosswalks when the light says to walk.

Roosevelt Boulevard has three of the five most dangerous intersections in the US primarily because people drive so fast and don't stop at things like crosswalks and lights. They've just organized funding to replace all the crosswalks with pedestrian bridges.
