If your talking about removing the small black knob so the dash can come out. It rotates and lifts. I can't remember which way. Either rotate it left towards the passenger door ( or the other way towards the drivers door ) and pull it towards the rear of the car. The control shaft will be left.

If removing the dash. Disconnect the center vent control shaft at the slide knob behind the dash. The shaft has a 90 degree turn at the end of the shaft.
