Center vent question for 240D owners
My 240D had an aftermarket AC system fitted to it when I got it. Part of this system included some odd vent connection plate that allowed the cooled air to come out of the center vents. I have removed all of the old AC system, but now have a 1” to 2”gap between the back of the center vents and the air box that feeds them. Can somebody look with a 240D look down their center vents and confirm that there should be some sort of duct that connects the two?
Thanks

I have had my center vents apart on my 300D and there is a rubber boot that connects the diffusers to the box where the flapper is. If you remove the glove box insert you should be able to access it.

The 240D center vent rubber duct is no longer available from Mercedes. The 300D duct can be modified to fit the 240D setup. On the 300D duct you must cut a hole for the on/off lever to pass thru. A large bulked material section on the 300D duct is there for this purpose.
The dealer can order the duct from Germany. It was not available in the US when I bought mine. Or check to see if Phil can get you one. This post covers replacing the rubber duct. Go to the last paragraph. http://www.peachparts.com/Wikka/W123HVACVacuumActuators Dave

Thanks. So it looks like I can install one with the dash in place. I guess I'll go ahead and replace my cracked dash this weekend.
Any idea how to remove the slider knob that controls the center vents?

IF you mean the slider knob that allows you to move from forced air only to passive fresh air, then you have to remove the speaker grill and speaker from the center dash. The slider knob is attached to a flip-style air manifold (right word??) via a rod that screws into a connection and has a locking nut on it and you get to it from the top through the speaker hole in the dash. At least that is how it is on my 75 240D. Good luck, Alex

I think it might be bit different on the W123. I don't have a center speaker.

I am curious as to what brand was the aftermarket A/C conversion. I have a European Cooler Air in mine. I haven't completed the instalation. I do have the evaporator box in place and the dash installed. I used the original rubber piece to connect the new plastic air box to the ducts. There was little problem getting it in place. Now installing the plastic evap unit was a lot of trial fitting.

If removing the dash. Disconnect the center vent control shaft at the slide knob behind the dash. The shaft has a 90 degree turn at the end of the shaft. Dave
