Could also be the pushbutton unit (PBU) in the dash or even the blower motor but I agree, check the fuses first. In addition to the strip fuse (or fuse 12 if you have an older '87 w/o the upgrade), the PBU also needs fuse 7 to be good. Remember to do more than just look at the fuses – actually remove them, make sure they don't fall apart in your hands!
