I don't know if you would call either the drain through the drain plug or the extraction method "correct". I find the extraction process much neater so I use it. I still pull the plug once a year and allow it to drip for a couple of hours. Old habits die hard.

I have the service manuals and the maintenance manuals for a later car, and they say "either/or. "- However, they also note that you may need to replace the drain plug copper washer after loosening the drain plug. I know a lot of people here will straighten them and re-use, especially if a drain plug washer is not available when you do the drain.
Personally, I think the drain plug method is more effective. But that's just opinion. Someone with a borescope could prove me wrong.
