If it's a cheapo laptop 200-300$ will get you a nice little laptop that can surf the internet and listen to some music.
I wouldn't get a netbook. Just get a used laptop from ebay for the time being.
I have an old white box Asus laptop with a Pentium M 1.5 ghz machine with 1gb of ram. I had the power settings set up in such a way that I could weasel out 5-6 hours of battery life
It had a 14 in 1024x768 screen if i recall correctly.
My macbook pro just barely inches out 3 hours
