The oil is carried by the refrigerant which gets well below freezing. Temp is sensed in the freezer so no problem to put it in an unheated area...

The typical domestic refrigerator, OTOH, will give you problems. The compressor operation of a refrigerator is usually determined by the temp in the refrigerator part of the box. If the thermostat is satisfied much of the time because the unit is located in a cold (freezing or sub freezing location) the compressor will never run enough to keep the freezer side completely frozen.
