Question Any harm in putting a chest freezer in an unheated, detached garage?

Yet another dumb question by yours truly. I can't foresee an issue and would think in the winter it would certainly cut down on energy usage. Is there any harm to the mechanicals if they're subject to sub-freezing temps for periods of time? My mother had no use for it anymore (it is an Energy Star certified model) and with four growing mouths to feed it'd be a great help for stocking up but I just don't have any room in the upper two floors of the house. The basement is a possibility at some point but there's just nowhere to put it right now so I'd like to put it in the garage. Is that okay?

I read somewhere that others have found that stuff in the freezer never gets cold because the thermostat works based on the outside ambient temperature...but those were units sitting in hot garages in the summer.

I don't think the mechanicals will be an issue, but you may have to search for a different thermostat unit specifically for the use that you are planning for.

from what i understand the newer units use a high speed compressor and the oil does not flow properly in cold temperatures.

I've had one for the last 20 years with no troubles, but the lowest temps where I live are only in the teens.

That doesn't seem to make sense. The thermal sensing device should be reading the internal temp to maintain it, not the outside ambient. We used to have a chest freezer in our garage, which never sees temps below 75 in Hawaii and it did a fine job of keeping things at zero.

My grandparents have had an old chest freezer out in our detached garage since 1993 (the freezer is older, I believe) and it's always worked. Temps do not usually drop below 0* here.

I had an upright freezer in the un-heated garage for a few years. It generated lots of frost in the summer due to the humidity but otherwise, it worked fine.

Have had a chest freezer in our garage the nearly 6 years we have lived here. No problems with anything melting except for the time that the GFCI tripped, but I remedied with a standard outlet on its own breaker. Mine has a bunch of frost too from humidity in the summer, but otherwise it's great. I could never go back to just a single fridge.

I have had severed body parts in a freezer chest for some months now and there is hardly any stench. Although the chest in the chest is turning some.

This might sound weird, but when I had my beer cooler in the garage it would get colder outside the cooler than the inside. So when I would get a beer out of it it wouldn't feel cold even though the cooler was working fine.

The oil is carried by the refrigerant which gets well below freezing. Temp is sensed in the freezer so no problem to put it in an unheated area...

The typical domestic refrigerator, OTOH, will give you problems. The compressor operation of a refrigerator is usually determined by the temp in the refrigerator part of the box. If the thermostat is satisfied much of the time because the unit is located in a cold (freezing or sub freezing location) the compressor will never run enough to keep the freezer side completely frozen.

Thanks, guys. I guess I'll give it a shot. Maybe I can move it out when it gets cooler and to the basement over the summer. It doesn't get real cold in the CT River Valley, teens occasionally and 20's generally.

I guess because that it was colder outside the cooler in the garage, the beer felt warmer inside the cooler.
