Try this, grab hold of your timing device and and see how much lateral play you have. I bought a 240 that had trashed the VP because the bushing in back of the timing device had warn and the timing device was "slamming" into the block with every pump of the VP. That caused a "grove" in the block so there must have a "noise" associated with that. The VP probably looked fine untill the "slamming" finally took it out. I never heard the engine run as I bought the car because of a fire in the cabin. But check that lateral play
