Can I run my motor for a few seconds without the vac pump

Can I run my om617 without the vac pump for a couple of seconds? I realize it'll probably spray some oil, but, it is like running it without the valve cover (messy but doable) or is it gonna be much worse?

I think it will make quite a mess. I have never run one without it before but I think it caps off quite a bit of oil pressure. Why do you need to run without it?

I was wondering the same thing. Sure would be a simple way to exclude it as a source of the knock. Wish I knew the answer.

I don't think it will be near as messy as no valve cover. I don't think it would be that messy at all actually.

It probably won't be all that messy....there is no "pressure" in there...maybe a bit of blow-by, but minimal.

Cover it with a tupperware or something- keep the engine from sucking in anything you don't want in there, keep the timing chain from picking up a stray this or that.

x2. Cut something plastic and use a couple of mounting bolts to hold it in place. I'd be more concerned about the fan blowing something into the opening than I would a bit of oil coming out.

Yeah it wasnt messy at all, there is some oil on the rotating parts in there but none sprayed out.

The knock still there, gonna go update my other thread about it. This thread was just so that people know that it is possible to run it without the pump if you are troubleshooting noise.

I tried this on my 603... it is WAY more messy then running with no valve cover. There is an oil jet pointing straight out... and it moves a lot of oil in a very brief time Running at idle with no valve cover made almost no mess in my expierence.

Try this, grab hold of your timing device and and see how much lateral play you have. I bought a 240 that had trashed the VP because the bushing in back of the timing device had warn and the timing device was "slamming" into the block with every pump of the VP. That caused a "grove" in the block so there must have a "noise" associated with that. The VP probably looked fine untill the "slamming" finally took it out. I never heard the engine run as I bought the car because of a fire in the cabin. But check that lateral play

What is the timing device? That round thing that the vacuum pump 'rides' on? the one that looks like it has springs on the other side of it? Can it come out?

Yep, thats it, in back of that T/D there is a brass bushing, which is a "ware item". anyway I had about 3.5 mms of lateral play which is way too much but I dont know whats allowable. Its something to check when you have the VP off, I had never heard of the problem before I saw it. I believe "Kerry" had a smellier problem.

Trust me - it will be messy. I inadvertently did this when I was in the middle of swapping the VP on my old 300TD.

You see, the engine lub system squirts oil into the VP. If the VP is not in place, guess where the oil goes.....

Also, the engine does not create the vacuum. Only the VP does that.

That would be something like starting the car with the instrument cluster out oops
