This whole steering thing reminds me of the first Consumer Reports test of the late-70's Dodge Omni/Plymouth Horizon. Apparently their testing regimen involved running a car up to 50 mph, turning the steering wheel a quarter-turn to the right, then letting go of the wheel to see what happens. During this test, the Omnirizon developed a form of oscillation that caused the car to swerve back-and-forth repeatedly, not unlike a skier working a slalom. Chrysler did everything but piss blood when this anomaly was publicized, but eventually installed a lighter steering wheel and a steering damper on later models which eliminated this problem.
