Does the 87 have a serpentine belt ? If so my wife's 4 runner does the same thing in the mornings . If it is a serpentine and you have a pulley or component bad one failure usually takes out the belt leaving you stranded.

This is where the V belts are nice. if the A/C locks you can still get home. A pain to install though.

The wax on the belt is a good idea cscmc1 . I never heard that one before but I can see where it would help for trouble shooting.
