Cold Start Noise
See if this hits any cords with you guys, I haven't had a chance to pop the hood and investigate yet and this only happened for the first time maybe Wednesday morning.
Upon starting my car in the morning I get a noise coming from the engine bay that is out of the ordinary. It sounds like a spinning part and goes away in a matter of maybe a minute. If I start the car in the morning I'll hear it, it's loud but does not change the performance of the car. Oil pressure and temperature are ordinary for the 40 minute drive to and from work and the noise goes away after maybe a minute of driving in the morning. Today when coming to a light after being on a highway for 30 minutes (where everything sounded fine/performance fine/gauges fine) I heard it again for a few seconds while idling. To me (and I could be way off, I know enough to be dangerous there are much more qualified individuals on this forum that would know more than me) it sounds like a dry bearing being moved around and maybe once the car starts moving a bit whatever fluid is used to prevent the friction comes back and it stops making the noise. Again I will probably hear it for a second or two starting my car up after work today too, in which I may video record it with my Flip -- not that the sound is that great on the flip but it may help. ![]() EDIT: This is on my 1987 300TD

Could it be a belt? I generally avoid the belt dressings, but they can be helpful in determining whether a given noise is belt-related. You can also use a candle and hold it against the belt as it spins... the wax will quiet things down without (in my case, anyway) harming the belt or letting it slip.

Thanks for your responces, and I apologize I forgot to mention I am talking about my 1987 300TD (going to edit post now).
@cscmc1 - that is a super slick move, I never thought of that before! I would suppose as long as you don't get wax on the inside of the belt it won't slip. Interesting tip! @1985300D - Pulley bearing was actually my first thought -- again I wanted second opinions though -- what's the worse that could happen, it ceases? Yes I plan to pop the hood after work today before I start it and video/take a look. It may be so loud though at first that I may have trouble finding where it is coming from.

Check the power steering pump, and the fluid level while you are in there.

@psaboic - I will, no whinning when I am turning though (referencing the old Ford power steering whine lol) and the power steering is smooth and the wheel is easy to turn.

Does the 87 have a serpentine belt ? If so my wife's 4 runner does the same thing in the mornings . If it is a serpentine and you have a pulley or component bad one failure usually takes out the belt leaving you stranded.
This is where the V belts are nice. if the A/C locks you can still get home. A pain to install though. The wax on the belt is a good idea cscmc1 . I never heard that one before but I can see where it would help for trouble shooting.

Yes it is a serp. belt to the bet of my knowledge. =)
Prior to this issue I remember hearing a squeak in the belt area that I thought was a pulley, even more so based off a Coda exercise, maybe this is phase two of that pulley on it's way out. |
