They were considered low spec after the rectangular euro's were introduced. They put them on the 240's, etc.

Similiar to the automotive way of same model car, say like the Malibu of the 70's. You had the Malibu and the Malibu Classic. The Malibu was a plain wrapper, while the Classic had the bells and whistles.
