I agree with what you are saying but the software is so much better than Microsoft stuff so you can use them for way longer... alternatively you could use your "normal" PC and install Linux and then may be you can get another 2 - 3 years of use out of your hardware. If you stick with MS products I think the usable life span of the hardware is somewhere between 3 and 4 years depending on the hardware specification at the point of purchase. So I would argue that a MAC is quite a good long term purchase option...
