It was a little weak if you asked me, but one could argue that his accent raised enough attention and the finger deal was the final straw.

It's been a little while since I last saw it but I think it was that the Germans use digits 3,4,5 (thumb over index finger; middle, ring and pinky extended). The accent made him suspicious but it was way he indicated "3" that confirmed it.
