Germans use their thumbs as one of the digits in 3. I guess that's unique to them. Brits, and most people as far as I know, use the 2,3,4 digits to indicate 3.

It was a little weak if you asked me, but one could argue that his accent raised enough attention and the finger deal was the final straw.
