Question about the movie "Inglorious Basterds"

How did the German in the bar find out the other guy was not German?

Maybe I missed it but how does holding up three fingers give it away?

Germans use their thumbs as one of the digits in 3. I guess that's unique to them. Brits, and most people as far as I know, use the 2,3,4 digits to indicate 3.

It was a little weak if you asked me, but one could argue that his accent raised enough attention and the finger deal was the final straw.

It's been a little while since I last saw it but I think it was that the Germans use digits 3,4,5 (thumb over index finger; middle, ring and pinky extended). The accent made him suspicious but it was way he indicated "3" that confirmed it.

Isn't that the way you insult an Italian? Supposedly, that "sign" indicates that the viewer/insultee is suppose to be the recipient of a "glory hole party" experience...to put it lightly...

I'm going to have to take your word for it, Mark.

I watched this movie twice, knowing some West Virginians made me love Pitts accent all the more. I rolled when he was speaking I talian. the sense of humor of Pitts charactor and the pure horse sense was great.

the movie explained the three fingers mistake in the dialog, similar to an American cutting and eating with the right hand mistake from a 50's spy movie

Using other fingers means you are either german or a middle school phys ed teacher who thinks he's cool.

He verbally indicated one number, but his fingers indicated another. Here's a more important question: Would anyone else but Quentin Tarantino have the balls to use a David Bowie song in a WWII movie?

That movie had some interesting parts but basically sucked IMHO. totally fantasized what might have been if Jewish folks had been scotch irish or something.

Normal rules do not apply to Tarantino, that's why everyone either loves or hates his movies. IMO, the best part of the movie was Christoph Waltz, he makes one creepy nazi.

tarantino made two decent films, pulp fiction and reservoir dogs, and everything after is just "kicks and pricks'. even those two movies are interesting only because of some good acting - willis, samuel jackson, tim roth- and, like all his scripts, are retreads of other people's movies. he's not worth talking about.

\Harvey Keitel is an excellent actor!

If we are talking about interesting films, why not add " The Usual Suspects" with Kevin Spacey, which is one of my favorites, along with "Kamikaze 89".
