It would be similar theory as any engine, basic stuff. Find the pointer for the timing mark on the crank and get it the mark that says O|T, this is a bit different on a Mercedes, this OT mark is TDC. Then take the cap off and see where the rotor is pointing. The mark has to be on the top of compression stroke of course. I'd assume you can tell by looking at the cap if it's correct or not (might be off 180 degrees, you can either rotate the engine one more time or else just go with the knowledge that the OTHER side is #1). Once you figure out #1, then you go clockwise around the cap with the firing order on the engine.
