The gear mechanism is defective. I had the same problem with my 94 E320 before. The gear meachanism overshoot in the up direction. I can hear the motor running but nothing happens. You need tho open the back seat cover. You will find the instruction on how to remove the back seat cover in the CD manual. Good luck.
