W124 electric headrests...
Hi all, some expertise please...
My '95 E420's left-side head rest has never worked (doesn't raise up and down with the switch on the door). I can hear the motor running when I move the switch, but no matter how I try to re-install the head-rest, the motor never 'grabs' the posts to re-engage properly. The owners manual shows how to remove the headrests but makes no mention of a trick to get motor to grab onto it again when putting it back in.... Is there a trick to this? TIA, - Ryan

You have to remove the rear of the seat and replace the lift bridge.

Replace the lift bridge eh Donnie? Care to elaborate a little more?
'Replace' to me, sounds like something may be broken, but I don't remember feeling anything snap or wrench free suddenly. Of course it could very well have been broken by the PO... I've never taken a seat apart in a 124 - any trick towards getting the back panel off? Also, is this lift bridge something expensive to replace? Mucho thanks in advance, - Ryan

The gear mechanism is defective. I had the same problem with my 94 E320 before. The gear meachanism overshoot in the up direction. I can hear the motor running but nothing happens. You need tho open the back seat cover. You will find the instruction on how to remove the back seat cover in the CD manual. Good luck.

There are several posts to this problem...I have replied to almost ALL of them...
Seems like it's time for all W124 headrests assemblies to go bad right now... Just did this repair about three weeks ago...the "lift bridge" is cheap...ordered 2 (one for later if and when the other one breaks) for $35 @ FastLane. So I guess they are $18 apiece? You can't tell by feel or otherwise that anything is amiss until you gain access to the broken part. Normally the plastic flange that grips one of the headrest shafts has cracked. The motor inertia will still allow the headrest to be "pushed" upward, but there is nothing to grip the shaft when in the downward mode. Anyway, here is the link to the thread I posted when I did the repair... http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?threadid=43301&highlight=headrest+repair

Thanks again, looks like I'll be giving fastlane a call... Regards, - Ryan

As pennance, please post photos to go with G-Benz's description!
I've got a sneaky feeling my headrest is on borrowed time...

Here's a video of how to get into the seat and look at the headrest parts.
