It is my experience that it is usually the input shaft seal that leaks. Pretty straightforward to change it out.

If the car is a diesel it could possibly be the supply/return hoses at the fuel tank pick up. As already stated, you should be able to tell a difference between the rear end fluid and diesel fuel.
