The aux pump is to pump more hot water thru the heater core to get more cabin heat and won't help much to cool the engine.

The thermostat should have been changed first. Always replace the lowest priced parts first.

I wouldn't have much faith in your mechanic. Hundreds of dollars spent and no improvement? The whole problem might be fixed by a $10 part.
