I think you'll find that the oil pan configuration is different because the oil pump is chain driven on the OM617a. You've also got to think about blocking off the oil to the turbo somehow or other (only if you're not going to use it of course!).

I guess the mounting points on the block are the same for the engine mounts and the transmission adapter etc etc

But why not use the turbo if you can get the block to fit in the engine bay?
