Yes, that's a trap oxidizer (original, replaced free every 30,000 miles) or a trap catalyst (recall in the late 1980s, installed free, a permanent replacement) for the OM617 turbo engine in a 1985 300D-T or 300SD, California version. If you have the VIN from the car the engine came out of, any dealer can look it up and tell you whether the recall was performed. Almost all 617s were done, I've never even seen a "trap oxidizer."

Don't confuse this with the trap cat recall that was done on the 1987 300D Turbo, which has an OM603 engine. In that car the trap cat was removed and a straight pipe was installed, plus a catalyst in the exhaust system, after the turbocharger.
