Is this a Trap Oxidizer?
Hi, a good friend and diesel benz fan here in town had this on an engine he just bought at the yard, and I think it's a trap oxidizer. If it is, shouldn't he put it back on and go to a dealer and have the system fixed under the recall?
Thanks!

It could be. Is that on a 617? See the part number on it?

Yes, that's a trap oxidizer (original, replaced free every 30,000 miles) or a trap catalyst (recall in the late 1980s, installed free, a permanent replacement) for the OM617 turbo engine in a 1985 300D-T or 300SD, California version. If you have the VIN from the car the engine came out of, any dealer can look it up and tell you whether the recall was performed. Almost all 617s were done, I've never even seen a "trap oxidizer."
Don't confuse this with the trap cat recall that was done on the 1987 300D Turbo, which has an OM603 engine. In that car the trap cat was removed and a straight pipe was installed, plus a catalyst in the exhaust system, after the turbocharger. Jeremy

Don't bother installing it on a car to try and get free parts. If the car you install it on has already had the trap-ox removed by the dealer, the VIN will show it in the system and they won't do it twice.
Jeremy, I'm pretty sure that the '86/'87 OM603 came with a trap-ox also, which was replaced by a trap-cat in the front pipe after the downpipe.

Must have been a replacement engine, then. Trap oxidizers first appeared (maybe) in 1984 models and (definitely) in 1985.

Ya. On the 617 the original DPF was replaced with a cat, but the position of the device stayed the same. On the 603 the DPF was also replaced with a cat, but the cat was put under the vehicle and the DPF replaced with a pipe.

Your friend pulls an engine from the yard, (junk yard?) and is going to install it in another vehicle? then drive said vehicle to the dealer to see if they will replace it? NO way that is going to happen.
Or are you asking, that your friend put everything back on the engine, and take the engine to the dealer to have them replace it? No way that is going to happen either. The engine has to be in the vehicle it came it, and in this case a 85 Calif car, and everything is recorded by mercedes by the VIN#. mercedes replaced these every 30,000 miles, part of the emission warranty. I had mine replace when we first got the car back in 97, was low on power, and had been on there 50,000 miles. think they replaced it with the new trap/Cat that never has to be replaced. so now that replacement is in MB`s records by Vin# of the car. It`s now in a box out in the barn and should last a long time. why in the world do you want to add all that junk back on? To answer your question, yes, that is the Cat/trap. Charlie

... 80/81 300D engine would not be turbocharged... do not use it with your turbo. if it's from a 300TD the 81 would be turbocharged, but it will have a pump boss on the head.

yeah, I agree...no reason to do so. I think we were thinking that the engine might never have been looked at by MB. But since it's not in the original car, there's no reason for him to even think about it.
Thanks for all the answers.
