I did (Actually a shop did the work.) subs under the headrests in an '88 300E, and they had to be removed. They would have stuck up even if they COULD have fit because the speakers grill reduces their "lay down" area.

Also - see my recent post on a subwoofer box in the trunk, ported through the first aid kit area. It's in a 400E, but the trunk and back deck are virtually the same. IF the Soundstream is a free air sub, it will be easier to mount in the rear deck, and probably sound better as well. Our trunks are extremely tight!
