87 260E speaker installation dilemma

Hi All,

Here's the scoop: 4 Nakamichi SP-300 (Plate type w/ 2 drivers - high and mid [8.75 x 5.5 x 1.75 (mid driver depth extends additional 1.5 " w/ 3.25" Diameter]) and 1 10" Soundstream Sub.

My dilemma is where to install in both front and rear. Should i consider placing the speakers on the front door panels... i.e. making the hole and having the speaker stick out and take space? Should I consider placing the rear speakers directly under where the headrest folds back?

I could possibly install them on the rear deck grilles and keep the room for the headrest to fold back, but that'll be a real tight squeeze.

Should I consider installing the Sub on/under the 1st Aid Kit and using the whole trunk as a box? this was the setup used on my brother's XR4TI and it was fine, but then again.... he had a smaller space.

I also need tips on how to run wires under the carpet both L/R and center to separate pwr/spkr/inputs....

Thanks....

I think you need to check the speakers and see if the foam surround is still plyable. Most of the nak speakers suspensions are rotten by now and if they are then it wont be worth tring to fit them into your car. If they are still good I would take the mids out of their frames and mount them and the tweeters under the rear grills and put the crossovers that are in the frames in the trunk under the shelf. I would do the fronts in a similar fasion but put the mids in the kickpanels (there is some cutting) use a bmw speaker grill from a 84 318 then put the tweeter in the dash in the stock opening. I have done this exact job back in the late 80's and it worked out well. As far as the sub free air works fine in the 1st aid kit. Also the best way to run wire is to pull the pass front seat out and run the rcas up the center and the power up the right side along with the speaker wires.

I hope this helps!

I did (Actually a shop did the work.) subs under the headrests in an '88 300E, and they had to be removed. They would have stuck up even if they COULD have fit because the speakers grill reduces their "lay down" area.

Also - see my recent post on a subwoofer box in the trunk, ported through the first aid kit area. It's in a 400E, but the trunk and back deck are virtually the same. IF the Soundstream is a free air sub, it will be easier to mount in the rear deck, and probably sound better as well. Our trunks are extremely tight!

Scott@lajollaaudio is THE man on this stuff!
