You would have to remove some materiel but I think you could get it looking much better without screwing up the function.
Thanks - I'm going to try a bit of grinding paste on a sanding block with some fine sand paper - I'll be starting with 1200 grit if I have any left. Then I'll stick it back on the roughest polishing wheel and see if it buffs out a bit. I'll post some pictures if it works out...

...otherwise expect to see a WTB thread in the parts forum!
