Yeah its definitely the amp
I had the same thing happening with my 92 400E. When I bought the 93 500E, the guy had swapped out the factory head unit and Amps with upgrades. However he kept all the OEM stuff. So I swapped out the amp in the 400E and the problem was fixed.
Got an OEM Becker head ubit if somebody wants/needs one. "Make me an offer I can't refuse"
