Its funny I wasn't sure what to make of that when I saw it. I assumed it was there to catch the rod if the rubber part failed.

I'll take a look at it this afternoon. The wire is mounted on a little tab that looked factory to me. It looks like it has been there for decades, if not the life of the car.
