I can absolutely assure you that the wire is shadetree engineering, not Mercedes engineering. The tab is original equipment, but that is not its intended purpose.

The part that typically fails is the nylon "ball joint" on the rear side of the component. They turn to powder after 20 or so years and just disappear.
